A Message from APC President...
Rev. Jon Overvold MDiv BCC

Last month, the APC Board announced their recommendation to create a new organization through the merger of APC and ACPE. This will go to a vote by both organizations sometime this summer for approval by the membership.   A common response from our members has been, “I have thought for years that APC and ACPE should come together.” I share the feeling that this joining together has been a long time in coming and we stand at an important waypoint in our journey as professional chaplains.
I am a bit amazed that this extraordinary and significant change is happening as we are in the midst of a global pandemic, as everything we have known has been shaken and tested. We are two strong organizations that have demonstrated innovation, flexibility and resilience to face the challenges of a world pandemic...Read More

BCCI News & Updates

The next deadline for BCCI certification applications is July 28, 2021.  We are very pleased that we continue to receive a large number of applications, but need to enforce some parameters in order to give the best service possible. Please note the following:

  • The applications must be in the office on July 28th, not postmarked by that date.
  • We will limit the number of interviews at 120 candidates.
    • What does this mean? As applications are received by the office and reviewed, those that are complete will be given one of the 120 interview slots.
    • Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received and assigned in the order completed.  If your application is incomplete or is not formatted correctly, it won’t be assigned a slot until it is fixed or complete.

APC Celebrating 75 Years
by Sarah Byrne-Martelli DMin BCC

2021 marks the 75th Anniversary of the Association of Professional Chaplains.  APC will be sharing reflections, testimonials, and historical facts related to APC throughout the year, but we would like to start this anniversary with the following reflection.  Traditionally, the 75th is the Diamond Anniversary.  We offer an image of the APC as a multifaceted diamond, luminous and strong, refracting the light that it catches with clarity and brilliance.

  • The more facets a diamond has, the more light is reflected.
    • We honor and cultivate the many types of diversity within our membership.
  • Some facets act as mirrors reflecting their environments.
    • We carefully observe and give voice to the joys, losses, challenges, and opportunities around us.
  • Other facets catch the light, bending and slowing its speed, releasing that same light back and refracting it into spectral colors.
    • We listen to the stories of those in our care and we offer back our unique insight, curiosity, and compassion in full color.

A Reflection: One Year of Professional Support Calls
by Rev. Joe Perez MDiv BCC

The month of March marks a year anniversary when the COVID pandemic hit our area. It has been a difficult and traumatic year for most of us, filled with changes which include an assortment of losses. Our professional practice has been truly challenged this past year.  As the pandemic began, our APC Board saw the intensity of it on our memberships’ professional practice, and it sparked us to use technology in a new way. Our APC office staff were quick to help us create virtual support sessions. Our board members were asked to facilitate these sessions and we were eager to do so because it gave us a meaningful way to reach out during this difficult time. I remember in my first session how one of our NYC chaplains spoke of feeling like a military chaplain helping staff face their fears and live into their callings; and at the same time he shared that he was trying to face his own fears and live into his calling. It was heavy to hear the burdens our colleagues were being pressed with; and at the same time it gave me great pride that our colleagues and our profession was stepping into the fray of difficulty to do what we can and growing as we practiced professional spiritual care through this fire....Read More

Remembering & Reflecting: Chaplaincy During COVID-19

We have given so much of ourselves over this last year in ways we could never have imagined before. Let us take a few moments to acknowledge all we have done, all we have endured, all that we continue to face. Please join this sacred virtual gathering to acknowledge the year we as chaplains have spent tending to the needs of those in our care, our coworkers, and our colleagues. We will hear from APC chaplains across the country who will reflect on their experiences, provide words of guidance from sacred texts, prayers to unite us, and moments of stillness to bring us peace. We encourage you to watch from a place of quiet and calm if you are able. Bring a candle to light, or a sacred object to have nearby. The focus of the service is to lament, grieve, rejoice, shore up, encourage resilience, and celebrate our work as professional chaplains through COVID and the tensions of the last year...Watch and Share

APC/Epic Collaboration Update

APC Collaborating with Epic…
The Association of Professional Chaplains has teamed up with Epic, one of the largest vendors for electronic health records (EHR), to enhance the spiritual care documentation for the EHR platform.  This chaplaincy documentation will follow along the Standards of Practice that APC has developed.
The goal of this collaboration is to have robust spiritual care content for Epic customers to choose when their institution is implementing the Epic software.  A team of board-certified chaplains are currently working with Epic’s Project Managers and specialists to work through the options and design. As subject matter experts, APC will take the lead on promoting the advantages of this new model as well as provide FAQ’s and informational sessions to spiritual care departments that choose to implement this chaplaincy documentation content.
