APC Forum, August 2020, Vol. 22 No. 5

Certification Interviews – APC has recently completed 82 Chaplaincy Certification Interviews via virtual/remote service.  These certification committee meetings were previously scheduled to take place in regional locations but were postponed and rescheduled to take place online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  Initial feedback from these interviews has been largely positive and APC staff will be reviewing candidate and committee feedback to refine the process going forward.

Certification Applications – APC has to-date received more than 260 applications for certification for the July 31, 2020 deadline.  Due to delays in the U.S. postal service we are expecting more applications that have been post-dated prior to the application deadline.  We ask for patience as our team reviews each of these applications.

Newly Certified Celebration – Early in July, APC sent newly certified chaplains their certificates along with an invitation to participate in a virtual celebration to be held as part of the APC Annual Membership Meeting.  Unfortunately, due to delays in the postage service, many of these certificates did not arrive until just recently and some may still be on their way to them.  Good News – There is still time to send us your photos.

To participate in our first ever Simulated Certified Chaplain Recognition and Celebration we are asking you to take three pictures of you with your new certificate (enclosed) and email them to APC at Conference@professionalchaplains.org

  • Picture 1 – You holding your certificate (standard commencement style photo).
  • Picture 2 – You with your certificate and any family members or colleagues you would like to be recognized for their support during this journey.
  • Picture 3 – A picture of you celebrating your newly bestowed certification.

PLEASE NOTE: For these photos, they should be saved in one of the following formats (.jpeg/.jpg or .bmp files).  Pictures should be no smaller than 450px x450px, a standard cellphone photo should be just fine!  To aid in our development of this video we ask that you save the pictures with the following name format: Last Name_Certification Type_Picture Number.  (Example: Smith_BCC_Picture1, Smith_BCC_Picture2; Johnson_ACC_Picture3; Jones_BCC-HPCAC_picture2)
The new deadline is August 31st. We look forward to celebrating your success!

2021 Certification Interviews – With the success of our first virtual board certification interviews, APC has slated the following BCCI application deadlines and interview schedule for 2021.  You can review the schedule HERE and please reach out to us with additional questions.

CE and Peer Review – BCCI® has always allowed for remote settings depending on circumstances as stated on the Peer Review Guidelines. Today’s situation/events would qualify to allow a remote meeting through Skype/Zoom/conference call. Should you have a peer review meeting remotely, enter/indicate on the Peer Review Report Form that your meeting was held remotely. Be sure to enter the names of the members of your committee also. Signatures are not necessary on the form.

And as working chaplains who also need those 50 hours each year, the APC board of directors and the BCCI commission on certification have heard and agree with your concerns and have come up with several ways in which that burden can be made a little lighter.

  • We have provided 5 webinars recordings which are free to view through September 30, 2020. Each one provides you with education on coping with issues concerning the pandemic.
  • We have provided opportunities for round table and support group discussions since March 27th which have helped many learn and process these changes and count for 1 hour of CE each – with more to come!
  • Our APC website has a COVID-19 resource page that has a list of articles, webinars, and other online educational opportunities that your reading or participating in will count toward the 50 hours.
  • And for 2020 you may earn 15 hours of continuing education by submitting a brief 1-3 page reflection on your experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some suggestions to get you started:
    • What have your learned through this pandemic?
    • How have you processed the anxiety and stress?
    • How have you cared for yourself?
    • Summarize your journal.
    • Share your creative writing.
    • Memorialize those we have lost.
    • Share lessons for the future.

Your reflections will not be “graded” or looked at to make sure they are done the “right” way. We have all learned way more than can be accounted for during this time, whether you served on the front lines of a hospital in a major city, or if you were furloughed from your position at a rehab facility, and we want to give you the opportunity to get credit for that education through these reflections.

If you would like to have your reflection shared, send as a pdf file to education@professionalchaplains.org. A limited number will be selected to be added to our resource page as a way for us as a community to capture this moment and what it meant to our profession.

When you fill out your report at the end of the year, you will log 15 hours of CE under methodology 2 (Writing) and include your written reflection at the end/bottom of your CE report. That’s it.  No other requirements.  Just capture your thoughts and share with us.

APC instituted the 50 hours of continuing education many years ago as a way to help encourage chaplains to continue to learn and grow in our skills and competencies, and to help us stay current in the ever changing landscape of our profession. Now more than ever each of us must continue to learn ways of navigating this new reality that we are living and serving in, and we are doing this in many different ways, that will likely go beyond the 50 hours that we require. Throughout the rest of this year, APC will continue to find ways of providing these educational opportunities for our members, and as you discover other articles, webinars, books, or research about chaplaincy and spiritual care, please share those with us so that we can add them to our resource page.

If you have questions about certification or interviews, please email bcci@professionalchaplains.org.
