In February, I had the privilege of interviewing Rev. Ron Oliver, the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) president. He is also the System Vice President, Mission & Outreach for Norton Healthcare in Louisville, KY. The Strategic Partners for Spiritual Care would like to share the following update.

Representatives from ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education (ACPE), Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), and Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) (hereafter “the Associations”) met March 18-19, 2019 in Miami, Florida at the offices of NAJC to examine a structure that reorganizes the associations into an entity while maintaining the unique and irreplaceable identity and contribution of each association to the profession. Letting a Loved One Go: When Someone Dies in the Emergency Room (Part 2)

Is the ER busy and the hospital room will be needed quickly?  Or did the death happen at a “quiet” time of day and there is less time pressure, so the family can linger with their loved one?

Time of day, the overall busyness (or lack of same) of the ER, along with the medical condition of the deceased are critical factors in determining how much latitude a family can have in remaining in the room with the body of a loved one.  It is recommended that your hospital adopt a formal or informal policy for how long you will allow a body to remain in the room after pronouncement.
