  • Collaborating with other Professions to Serve Those in our Care.
  • Empowering the Profession through Research
  • Supporting Diversity and Inclusiveness

An Invitation from Your Conference Co-Chair

Make your plans now to come to Anaheim, CA, July 12-15, for the largest conference for chaplains in 2018.  It will be a joint conference with NACC and the first one with APC and NACC since 2005.  Combining highly-appointed accommodations and superior service, our conference hotel is the newly renovated and beautiful Anaheim Marriott. It offers easy access to top attractions including Disneyland, many theaters, shopping and dining.  After a day of meetings, enjoy a workout in the state-of-the-art fitness center, soak up sun at the resort-style pool, enjoy a snack on the dining deck or cozy up near a fire pit whilereconnecting with colleagues you may not have seen in person for 13 years.
Our conference theme is “Partners in Shaping the Future,” and our four plenary speakers; 27 pre-conference Professional Development Intensives; 53 conference workshop presenters; and prayer/worship sessions willaddress the following four goals:
     1)  Leading with Professionalism and Integrity
     2)  Collaborating with other Professions to Serve Those in Our Care
     3)  Empowering the Profession through Research
     4)  Supporting Diversity and Inclusiveness
The sub-committees, under very capable leadership, have planned some excellent opportunities to be challenged, educated, and re-created as well as to serve others and to receive care.  Beth Lenegan, NACC, is chair for the Plenaries; Brian Hurley, APC, chairs Workshops and Education; Richard Bartoszek, NACC, chairs Spiritual Needs; and Lance Tyler, APC, chairs Local Arrangements.  The Conference Co-Chairs are Mary Lou O’Gorman, NACC, and Valerie Storms, APC.
As in past conferences, there will be opportunities to stop at the Exhibit Hall to visit with vendors, peruse their offerings, and win prizes at various times throughout the conference.  The Annual Membership Meeting is another “must attend” as round table discussions with APC Board members provide chances to ask questions, make suggestions and learn more about how decisions are made for our association.
One of the highlights of the conference will be the time of celebration at the Grand Banquet as we recognize our new certified and provisionally certified Associate and Board Chaplains.
In Anaheim you will find all of the above and more.  This gathering with chaplain colleagues and others with whom we partner will be informative, expansive and energizing while shaping an evolving future that is collaborative, innovative and inclusive.

You will want to be there.

California, here we come!

Exciting Workshops and Professional Development Intensives
Our conference has many opportunities for professional development. One of the primary ways this development takes place is through the Workshops and Professional Development Intensives. This year we had over 160 applications from potential presenters for these presentations. At the conference we will offer over 25 Professional Development Intensives (four and eight hour sessions) and over 50 Workshops (90 minute sessions). The Education Subcommittee worked very hard reviewing the applications and making sure we had the best presentations from a diverse group of presenters about a variety of important topics. The committee also made sure our theme of Partners in Shaping the Future and our goals of: Leading with Professionalism and Integrity, Collaborating with other Professions to Serve Those in our Care, Empowering the Profession through Research and Supporting Diversity and Inclusiveness were well represented in the presentations being offered.
One of the benefits of having a joint conference is that many of our presentations will be co-led by Chaplains from both the APC and the NACC that serve in the same institution.  We have chaplain presenters from hospitals, hospices, long term care facilities, the military and prisons. Non-chaplain presenters include: Physicians, Professors, a Human Resource Professional, a Life Coach, a Conference Center Director, a Psychotherapist, CPE Educators, a local church Pastor, Denominational Executives, an Artist, an Ethics Consultant, Vice Presidents of hospitals and health systems, a Director of LGBT Programs and Policies for a health system and Nurses.  The presenters will come from across the United States, and we have international presenters from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Kenya.
The topics that will be covered during the presentations include advocacy, alternative therapies, crisis response, disaster response, diversity, documentation, ethics, partnerships, patient satisfaction, research, self-care, spiritual assessment and technology.  An example of one of our workshops is being led by three colleagues from the same Hospital – a Rabbi, a Roman Catholic Priest and a Chaplain. They will review the departmental covenant they created and explain how that guides their work and enhances the care they provide.  Another one of our workshops is being presented by two chaplains that serve in Anchorage, Alaska. The school district where their hospital is located has students that speak over 107 different languages. This workshop will focus on strengthening our cultural competency as the presenters draw from the experience of working in such a diverse culture.
The educational opportunities at our conference will be rich and deep. We are thankful for all of our presenters as they prepare for our conference.  We look forward to learning together as we continue to grow in our professional development.
Rev. Brian Hurley M.Div., BCC serves on the 2018 Joint Conference Planning Committee as the Education Subcommittee Chair. He works as a Staff Chaplain at Lakeland Regional Health in Lakeland, Florida.
