2017 Annual Conference Recap & Review

APC Forum, July 2017, Vol. 19 No.5

On June 22nd, the 2017 APC Annual Conference kicked off with an amazing evening of TED style talks featuring the Rev. Al Miles, Dr. Brent Peery and Rev. Marilyn Barnes.  The session was compelling, emotional and thought-provoking.  It was a great way to start the conference and the cherry on-top was the fabulous desert reception that followed the plenary which included a wide variety of sweets such as mini pecan pies, a fried Ice Cream Bar and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!!!

This year’s Annual Conference in Houston, Texas was a remarkable and well received event which included Professional Development Intensives, Workshops, Plenary Sessions, Luncheons and the Grand Banquet.  All of this was made possible thanks to our amazing sponsors and supporters who made financial and material contributions.  We at APC would like to thank this year’s sponsors again for the generous contributions.

There were many highlights to this year’s conference, and every attendee took something different away from their experience.  Three awards were bestowed to professional chaplains during the course of the conference including Clark S. Aist who was awarded the Retired Chaplain Award for his long and continued service to APC and the profession of chaplaincy. He received his award during the APC Membership Luncheon. The Rev. Dr. Dallas Little BCC was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to the profession of chaplaincy and his efforts to encourage more military chaplains to seek additional education and certification that will benefit them in their careers.  The Anton Boisen Professional Service Award was presented jointly to Daniel H. Grossoehme and Susan L. Jelinek for their work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They have developed a novel approach though teamwork in providing chaplaincy care to transgender youths and their parents. Their work is a shining example of how research and clinical care can actively work together for the best outcome for patients and family spiritual care.

In addition to the honors and fun, the APC Annual Conference carried on the tradition of raising awareness and financial support for a local Charity.  This year the local charity was Houston Children’s Charity which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Greater Houston’s underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind.  Thanks to the generous contributions from conference attendees, the APC was able to raise over $2,700 for the organization during the course of the conference – Thank YOU to all who contributed!

The pinnacle of the conference was without a doubt the Grand Banquet event on Saturday night when the 2016-17 Newly Certified Chaplains received their certificate and were joined in celebration by their colleagues, friends and family!  It is always a memorable and powerful event.  If you have not had the opportunity to witness and participate in the joy and camaraderie that is displayed during that celebration, make sure you put it on your “bucket list” for an upcoming APC Conference.

The APC Annual Conference is so much more than an opportunity to earn Continuing Education, it is an opportunity to visit and collaborate with colleagues, meet and learn about a variety of products and services from the vendors, exchange ideas and challenge y our own paradigms in a comforting and supportive setting.  We will be sharing more insights and take always from the past conference in the weeks and months to come but if you are interested in purchasing recordings of the workshops and plenaries, please visit the Conference Recordings link to learn more. Save the Date for the 2018 APC / NACC Joint Conference July 12-15, 2018 in Anaheim, California.
