A Message from APC President
by Kimberly Murman, MDiv MBA BCC
(The Following is the President's Address delivered at the 2017 APC Annual Conference in Houston, TX)

The 2017 APC annual conference and our Grand Banquet is a night to celebrate not only our past and our present, but certainly in the conferring of BCC on so many new colleagues - a direct connection to our future.
As we gathered together this week, many of us had the opportunity to connect with long-time colleagues. Some of us met new people who may become treasured friends and colleagues or people who will become important to our ministry now or in the future.  All of us have seen the excitement on the faces of our brothers and sisters who are being awarded their BCC certificates tonight.
Every year at the annual conference, I am reminded anew that none of us came to this ministry alone or Board Certification alone... Read More

2017 Annual Conference Recap & Review

On June 22nd, the 2017 APC Annual Conference kicked off with an amazing evening of TED style talks featuring the Rev. Al Miles, Dr. Brent Peery and Rev. Marilyn Barnes.  The session was compelling, emotional and thought-provoking.  It was a great way to start the conference and the cherry on-top was the fabulous desert reception that followed the plenary which included a wide variety of sweets such as mini pecan pies, a fried Ice Cream Bar and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!!!

This year’s Annual Conference in Houston, Texas was a remarkable and well received event which included Professional Development Intensives, Workshops, Plenary Sessions, Luncheons and the Grand Banquet.  All of this was made possible thanks to our amazing sponsors and supporters who made financial and material contributions.  We at APC would like to thank this year’s sponsors again for the generous contributions.... Read More

New Online Certificate Course Supports Chaplain Leadership in the Field of Palliative Care
by Jamie Beachy, PhD, Certified ACPE Educator, CSU Institute for Palliative Care Affiliate Faculty
Palliative care stands at the forefront of growing fields within health care.  With a focus on the whole person, including the spiritual dimension of health, palliative care increases patient and provider satisfaction, provides equal or better symptom control, creates more discernment of and honoring choices about quality of life, leads to fewer and less intensive hospital admissions in the last month of life, decreases anxiety and depression, supports less caregiver distress, and creates cost savings (Hughes & Smith, 2014).
Palliative care can be defined as patient and family-centered approach to care that is provided throughout the continuum of illness for those with serious or chronic illness.  Delivered by an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary team, palliative care optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and treating suffering.
Chaplains have a unique opportunity to influence the development of the expanding field of palliative care...Read More
