Summer is a Great Time for Continuing Education!

by APC President Kimberly Murman MDiv MBA BCC
APC Forum, June 2017, Vol. 19 No. 4
It is the half-way point of the year, yay! So, too, it is the half-way point in the Continuing Education year.  So – are half your CE hours for 2017 completed?!  No!!! Mine are not!
The Annual Conference is a great time to gather up CE hours. In the course of the conference significant hours accumulate through plenary speakers, workshops and various forms of education at our finger tips.  It is very true that many of our APC members are unable, for many reasons, to attend conference and miss out on the accumulation of hours.  As I write this, our annual conference, “The Powerful Voice of Chaplaincy” in Houston, TX is mere days away.  The conference looks to be amazing and if you are not registered to attend – I would invite you to consider purchasing the audio files of our plenaries and any workshops that seem interesting. Shortly after the conference has concluded a link to our A-V company will be available to purchase those. A great buy!
For many, 50 hours looms like a seemingly unattainable goal. So, how easy is it to get to 50 hours? And what about those minimum 5 hours under the new Research category? I don’t do any research, so – what fits under that category?
If you have not had a chance to thoroughly peruse it - make sure you have consulted the Continuing Education Program Guidelines - there’s a link in the CE form. They will help you understand how easy it is to accumulate those hours.
First off, start with the “easy” (up to 15-19) hours!
  • Methodology 7 - Service to National APC
    • If you are involved in a committee – any APC committee, task force or work group – or if you are an Area Chair for Certification, State Rep or Education Chair, or if you serve on a BCCI Certification interview committee, you can designate up to 10 hours of service to the total.
    • Did you participate on a 5 year peer review committee? If yes, you can use up to 1.5 hours.
  • Methodology 6 – Peer Review
    • Is it your peer review year? If yes, then you can claim up to 5 hours.
  •  Methodology 4 – Professional Self-Care:
    • Make sure you check out what is allowed in this category. You can claim up to 4 hours for things like Spiritual Direction, Spiritual Retreats, etc.
What then about the Research category if you do not participate in research?
  • Remember that this category, for most of us, is about being research literate. As chaplains, we need to become much more comfortable seeing issues or “problems” in our workplace and automatically wondering if there have been any articles that have dealt with the same issue. Do we have a sensibility about us that we know how to acquire, read, evaluate and understand the focus of peer reviewed articles?
    • Reading research articles
    • Attending the APC Journal Club Webinars hosted by George Fitchett and Patricia Murphy.
APC is committed to providing all chaplains with affordable and easily accessible continuing education.  We currently have slated the following Continuing Education programs and events:
  • Webinars
    • Medical Intervention of Children with Gender Dysphoria - A Research Review
    • Working Together, We're Not That Different
    • Following the Patient Outside the Hospital: Chaplaincy in an Accountable Care Organization (ACO)
  •  Webinar Journal Club VII beginning in September of 2017
  •  Joint Symposium on October 17, 2017
  •  Webinar Recordings library
If you ever have questions or are in need of clarification regarding Continuing Education please feel free to reach out to the APC office staff including our Education Department.  They are here to help you answer your CE related questions!
