A Message from APC President...
Rev. Jon Overvold MDiv BCC

Dear Members of APC:
I am honored and grateful to serve as the President of the Association of Professional Chaplains for 2020 – 2021.
I want to begin by expressing my gratitude to our outgoing President, Joe Perez, for his leadership this past year. Throughout a year of global pandemic and national division, he has guided APC with support for our members and raised up the important role of professional chaplains for such a time as this. Thank you Joe for your many years of service to APC and especially in this past year as its president.
As I look forward to 2021 we still face the ongoing challenge of the Covid 19 pandemic. Our communities are stretched to the breaking point. Our front line workers, first responders and essential workers have been running a marathon for 10 months now. Our own members are digging down deep into their spiritual resources and using their professional training to provide spiritual care to people who have lost livelihoods and loved ones. And our own chaplains are among those people who have known these losses and changes. Read More

APC News & Updates

Certification Interviews - APC/BCCI completed over 260 certification interviews for candidates that submitted their completed applications by the summer 2020 deadline.  The volume of applicants and the nature of virtual certification interviews presented new challenges for APC, candidates and committee members but the process was a success.  The BCCI Commission on Certification will be reviewing this new certification interview model in the coming months and new guidelines will be developed for future interviews.  Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make the process a success.

Special Interest Groups - Beginning in 2021, APC will be starting regularly scheduled Special Interest Group (S.I.G.) virtual calls.  Please keep an eye out for future communications regarding these calls in the coming weeks.

Support Calls - With the increased surge of COVID-19 cases around the United States, APC is continuing to hold regular Professional Community Support Calls for APC members.  Participants on these calls can claim one hour of Continuing Education for each call they participate in.  These calls are dedicated to helping APC members talk, grieve, share resources, and best practices related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  To see the call schedule, view the EVENTS page and be sure to register to attend.

A Message of Thanksgiving
by Rev. Amy Karriker BCC

Thanksgiving 2020

It can be difficult, if not impossible, to find good southern cooking on Long Island, New York, but I lucked out when I found my UCC church nine years ago after moving here. My pastor and my associate pastor are both Southern transplants, like myself. Since arriving, I have celebrated Thanksgiving every year with my newfound church family and have truly enjoyed some delicious Southern cooking!

Each year, I Google and Pinterest new Thanksgiving dishes and decorations in order to bring my offerings to their table. But this year is different. All you will find in the headlines and Google searches are Thanksgiving Day safety recommendations from the CDC, state and national officials and from doctors and hospitals. Even the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade will be virtual with no crowds! COVID-19 and 2020 continue to be the uninvited guests that won’t leave!

So how do we celebrate this holiday that has traditionally been about spending time with your family and friends recalling all of the things and people we are thankful for when we can’t be with those we are most thankful for?
