2017 APC® Annual Conference
June 22-25, 2017
Marriott Marquis Houston – Houston, TX

The 2017 APC Annual Conference in Houston, TX, brought together almost 600 attendees for unique continuing education opportunities, uplifting spiritual programs and time to relax with colleagues. Whether you were onsite or following from home via @APC_Forum, we hope you learned a few things and felt a part of the APC community. We invite you to join us next year at the 2018 Joint APC/NACC Conference July 12-15, 2018, in Anaheim, CA.

Thursday’s events included a tour of the Texas Medical Center Sacred Spaces, a First time Attendee Orientation and an Opening Celebration which included TED style talks from three powerful speakers. Please take a few minutes to view a brief video that was created to capture the comradery and excitement of our Annual Conference.

The APC conference featured sessions and presenters around the theme "The Powerful Voice of Chaplaincy." Participants attended their choice of 45 workshops, 17 professional development intensives and 20 poster presentations. Outstanding plenary sessions included:

·       Rev. A. Meigs Ross BCC ACPE LCSW, “Dwelling in Unity: Chaplaincy in a Complex System”
·       Dr. Beverly Malone PhD RN FAAN, “Without Collaboration, No Leadership” 
·       Martin Doblmeier, “‘CHAPLAINS’ Screening” (Many thanks to Fetzer Institute for providing a copy of the documentary “CHAPLAINS” to each attendee)

Other conference highlights:
·       Conference Charity: APC members and attendees contributed more than $2,700 to Houston Children’s Charity.  Donations were collected following a brief presentation from representatives from HCC during the Membership Luncheon and Plenary Luncheon. 
·       Annual Leadership Awards: APC recognized four individuals for their remarkable work to advance professional chaplaincy and the association. Clark S. Aist who was awarded the Retired Chaplain Award for his long and continued service to APC and the profession of chaplaincy. He received his award during the APC Membership Luncheon on Friday, June 23.  Three more award recipients were honored during the Grand Banquet on Saturday, June 24, 2017 including The Rev. Dr. Dallas Little BCC was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to the profession of chaplaincy and his efforts to encourage more military chaplains to seek additional education and certification that will benefit them in their careers. The Anton Boisen Professional Service Award was presented jointly to Daniel H. Grossoehme and Susan L. Jelinek for their work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They have developed a novel approach though teamwork in providing chaplaincy care to transgender youths and their parents. Their work is a shining example of how research and clinical care can actively work together for the best outcome for patients and family spiritual care.
·       50th and 25th Member Anniversaries: APCs board recognized membership anniversaries. We owe a debt of gratitude to these members for their loyal support of APC and the chaplaincy profession.
·       Appreciated Leaders: APC extends its sincere gratitude to chaplains who are serving in national and local leadership roles within the association. Current leaders were honored during the Member Recognition Luncheon.
 
Lastly, please join us in congratulating the certified chaplains in the Class of 2016-2017. The class was honored during the Grand Banquet on Saturday, June 24, and certificates were presented to graduates who attended the conference. Since the 2016 conference, 326 candidates have been ratified as board certified, 41 as provisional board certified, six as associate certified chaplains and two as provisional associate certified. In addition, three chaplain completed the specialty certification process and were ratified as board certified chaplains – hospice and palliative care certified (BCC-HPCC).

The 2016 APC Annual Conference in Orlando, FL, brought together more than 560 attendees for unique continuing education opportunities, uplifting spiritual programs and time to relax with colleagues. Thursday night’s Opening Celebration featured a candlelight memorial dedicated to the victims and honoring the first responders of the Pulse Nightclub shootings. This video gives you a glimpse into the touching tribute paid by our community.

The APC conference featured sessions and presenters around the theme "Together@ the Table: Chaplains as Strategic Partners." Participants attended their choice of 45 workshops, 17 professional development intensives and 22 poster presentations. Outstanding plenary sessions included:

Other conference highlights:
  • Pulse Nightclub Memorial: On Friday night, 50 members made a pilgrimage of support and solidarity to the site of the Pulse Nightclub shootings in Orlando. Together, the group raised nearly $300 to donate to Equality Florida's "Pulse Victims Fund.”
  • Conference Charity: APCmembers and attendees contributed $3,723 in free will offerings to The Mustard Seed of Central Florida during the Membership Luncheon and Plenary Luncheon.
  • Annual Leadership AwardsAPC recognized four individuals for their remarkable work to advance professional chaplaincy and the association: Dr. George Pickle, Robert A. Kidd MDiv BCC, Rev. Laurie Peterson Jeddeloh BCC and Rev. Dirk Van Der Vorst MDiv BCC. Awards were presented at the Member Recognition Luncheon on Friday, June 24 and the Grand Banquet on Saturday, June 25, 2016.
  • 50th and 25th Member Anniversaries: APCs board recognized membership anniversaries. We owe a debt of gratitude to these members for their loyal support of APCTM and the chaplaincy profession.
  • Appreciated Leaders: APC extends its sincere gratitude to chaplains who are serving in national and local leadership roleswithin the association. Current leaders were honored during the Member Recognition Luncheon.
Lastly, please join us in congratulating the certified chaplains in the Class of 2015-2016. The class was honored during the Grand Banquet on Saturday, June 25, and certificates were presented to graduates who attended the conference. Since the 2015 conference, 173 candidates have been ratified as board certified, 65 as provisional board certified, four as associate certified chaplains and two as provisional associate certified. In addition, one chaplain completed the specialty certification process and were ratified as board certified chaplains – hospice and palliative care certified (BCC-HPCC).

Soul Meets Data: Research & Technology in Chaplaincy Care

The 2015 APC annual conference in Louisville, KY at the Louisville Marriott Downtown, offered a convenient location in the heart of the city, stimulating continuing education, uplifting spiritual programs and time to relax with colleagues. Themed "Soul Meets Data: Research & Technology in Chaplaincy Care," the APC conference featured outstanding pleanary sessions: Tammie E. Quest MD, "High Touch with High Effectiveness: The Future Role of Chaplains in the Care Management of the Seriously Ill;" Angelo E. Volandes MD MPH, "The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care;" Meredith Gould PhD, "Social Media Opportunities, Challenges, and Moving Forward Today and Tomorrow;" and George Fitchett PhD BCC, "Evidence-Based Chaplaincy Care: Oxymoron? Mistake? No-Brainer:," which was also viewed by remote audiences across the country via live Internet feed.

More than 575 participants attended their choice of 40 workshops, 17 professional development intensives, 15 poster presentations and two excursions.

In 2014 APC recognized four individuals for their remarkable work to advance professional chaplaincy and the association: Kevin Flannelly, Kenneth Pargement, Robert L. Grigsby and John C. Wilson. Awards were presented at the Member Recognition Luncheon on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6, 2015.

50th and 25th Member Anniversaries. At the Member Recognition Luncheon, the board recognized membership anniversaries. We owe a debt of gratitude to these members for their loyal support of APC and the chaplaincy profession.

Since the 2014 conference, 241 candidates have been ratified as board certified, 59 as provisional board certified, seven as associate certified chaplains and one as provisional associate certified. In addition, two chaplains completed the specialty certification process and were ratified as board certified chaplains – hospice and palliative care certified (BCC-HPCC). Please join us in congratulating the certified chaplains in the Class of 2014-2015. The class was honored during the Grand Banquet on Saturday, June 6, 2015 and certificates were presented to graduates who attended the conference.

Re:Imagine – The Art and Business of Professional Chaplaincy

The 2014 APC annual conference in Anaheim, CA provided an exciting location, stimulating continuing education, uplifting spiritual programs and time to relax with colleagues. Themed "Re:Imagine - The Art and Business of Professional Chaplaincy," the APC conference opened with APC Strong, TED-style talks by Imam Yusuf Hasan BCC, Margo Richardson BCC and John Simon BCC. Other plenary sessions were presented by Rita Nakashima Brock and Herman Keizer, James Merlino, and Gary Gunderson. More than 550 participants attended their choice of 46 workshops, 22 professional development intensives, 16 poster presentations, three excursions and a chaplain documentary discussion.

 The 2012 conference featured a wealth of educational programming, as well as opportunities for networking, relaxation and reflection. The event featured plenary speakers Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., Valerie Ulstad MD MPH MPA, Richard M. O'Neill PhD FAClinP CGP and Wendy Cadge MA PhD. Nearly 800 participants attended their choice of more than 50 workshops, 19 professional development intensives, a poster session featuring 14 presentations, three excursions, a film and a special concert.

50th and 25th Member Anniversaries. At the Member Recognition Luncheon, the board recognized membership anniversaries. Last year, one chaplain celebrated his 50th anniversary, and 37 members celebrated their 25th anniversary. We owe a debt of gratitude to these members for their loyal support of APC and the chaplaincy profession.

Appreciated  Leaders. APC extends its sincere gratitude to chaplains who served in national and local leadership roles within the association. Leaders whose terms expired October 31, 2010 were honored during the Member Recognition Luncheon.

Congratulations, Newly Certified Chaplains

In 2010-2011, 221 professional chaplains were ratified as board certified, provisional certified or associate certified chaplains. Please join us in congratulating the chaplains in the Class of 2010-2011. The graduating class was honored during the Grand Banquet on Saturday, March 26, 2011 and certificates were presented to graduates who attended the conference (pictured below).
