"Asking the Right Questions" by Amy Greene, Board Chair, ACPE

One of the things I learned in my brief career as a journalist was that the key to getting the right information was….wait for it….asking the right questions. How many times do we find that true in our spiritual care, or education, or anything else we endeavor to accomplish with some purpose?

In my role as ACPE Board Chair, one of its greatest privileges is working alongside leaders of our spiritual care strategic partners (APCCASC[/ACCS], NACC, NAJC). So, based on a stimulating conversation with the President of the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Rev. Ron Oliver, I thought it might be helpful...Read More

2019 APC Conference Plenary Speaker Line-Up
by Robert A. Kidd BCC, Chair, Plenary Speaker Sub-Committee

The theme for this year’s Annual Conference of the Association of Professional Chaplains is an event planner’s dream:  “Outside the Lines: Expanding Boundaries in Client Care, Self-Care, Institutional Care and Community Care.“  Such a gloriously expansive theme lets presenters go pretty much anywhere as long as it’s innovative.  It was with that spirit of excitement and possibility that your Plenary Speaker Selection Committee did its work this year.  And do we have a line up for you!...Read More

APC Expands Professional Advocacy with Legislative Tracker

APC continuously works to meet our members needs and our latest development was based off the feedback we received from the 2017 APC Membership Satisfaction Survey.  Many of the responses to the survey indicated that our members and certified chaplains are looking for resources to help them advocate for the profession of chaplaincy and those in their care.  While previously APC had many of these resources available, it became clear from the survey responses that many of these resources needed updating and, in some instances, new resources needed to be brought online...Read More

Policy Regarding Accepted CPE for Certification

In August of 2018 the APC Board of Directors in conjunction with the BCCI Commission on Certification approved the following policy regarding acceptable Clinical Pastoral Education needed for applicants for Board Certification.  This policy is a clarification and does not change the associations policy for CPE but rather outlines and codifies it.  It is the aim of APC/BCCI to require our candidates for certification to have received quality, uniform Clinical Pastoral Education from institutions that are approved by the Code of Federal Regulations in order to ensure our candidates meet the highest standards for the profession and to place their education on par with their colleagues...

Spiritual Psychology and the Hospice Death Journey: The Chaplain's Challenge
by Tom McQueen MDiv

It takes a special person to embrace the vocation of a hospice chaplain. Experiencing the deep-seated joy of uniting a couple in marriage, baptizing a newborn infant, or partying at a church festival isn’t a routine occurrence for those whose everyday ministry manages the reality of death and grief.

But ask the most competent, committed, and compassionate chaplains and they will tell you that they wouldn’t trade their calling in life for anything else in the world...Read More

The Professional Chaplain as Spiritwright
by Mark LaRocca-Pitts PhD BCC

Introduction:
Beginning with the early pioneers in healthcare chaplaincy, as exemplified by Anton Boisen and Richard Cabot, and continuing into our current profession, as exemplified by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP) and the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), a philosophical as well as a pedagogical difference has existed between the doer of chaplaincy care and the doing of chaplaincy care (Thornton, 1970). A friend and colleague Tom Mozley, a retired ACPE supervisor, defined this divide so articulately...Read More

My Journey to Board Certification: Blessing, Challenge, and Conundrum
by Puanani Lalakea BCC

The journey to becoming a Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) is daunting. I admit that, initially, I was reluctant to follow the BCC route. I do not believe the letters after one’s name are necessarily an indication of competency or success. Thus, I questioned the need to jump through someone else’s labor intensive hoops in order to “prove” what I already knew; namely, that I am a chaplain.  In the end, however, I decided I would pursue board certification because, as a hospital chaplain, I work in a world where letters after one’s name are an important indication of the level of education and training one has received.  The BCC designation provides...Read More

2018 National Consensus Project: Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, 4th edition

Many people living with a serious illness who are receiving treatment for their condition, whether heart failure, lung disease, cancer or another illness, don’t have access to palliative care, which can make all the difference in how they feel physically, emotionally and spiritually.
