Be Thankful for the Every Day WOW Moments
By APCTM President Kimberly Murman MDiv MBA BCC

I try every day to find a WOW moment as I go about my day. It may be something so easy to overlook as sunshine on my face, a thank you from a patient or the beautiful music coming from a harp in the lobby. I encourage you to look for those moments as well, that they might support and sustain you through the more difficult times.

We intentionally pause at this time of year for reflection on gratitude. At a recent Board of Director’s Meeting in Chicago, I acknowledged to myself the privilege of representing ... Read More

By Rev. Stacy Otto MDiv BCC

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yet some may experience a far different reality as the holidays can be a reminder of loss and loneliness. By George Rossi MA MDiv BCC and Tamara R. Flinchum MA MDiv BCC

Chaplains can often feel like Lone Rangers at their individual facilities, longing for the support of colleagues and the stimulation of their ministry through new ideas, but lacking opportunities to make those connections. Creating an area-wide chaplain group is a worthwhile endeavor, even though the process is not always easy. Through leadership in the South Carolina Society of Chaplains (SC SoC), we have witnessed and directed the growing pains necessary to help a membership group remake itself in order... Read More

Chaplains as Midwives to Reorientation
By Fred Grewe DMin BCC

We are made not merely of flesh and blood, but of stories.” - African Proverb

I am often asked just exactly what is it I do as a hospice chaplain. My answer usually depends on how much time I have to spend with the one asking the question.

My elevator reply is “I work to make a safe place for people to emotionally lose control.” When a doctor has just told you you’re going to die soon, losing... Read More

Invitation to the Dance
By Caryn L. Baham

I soft shoe down the long corridors, knowing an invitation will eventually come
And wonder what role I will play when I step on the dance floor

Some patients will ask me to join them in a tap dance
And we’ll lightly step in time, afraid to face the fear head on
With each fa-lap ball change covering screams so desperate to escape
