Overview
Offering support to NICU parents can be a difficult task when they are faced with the reality of life and death of their precious child. Preparing staff and oneself in the art and practice of empathetic presence can be a difficult task, especially in areas such as the NICU. However, preparation is essential to promoting staff self-care, end of life care practices and presence, and reducing moral distress. This session aims to explore the grief cycle, by beginning with the staff members themselves and exploring their self-awareness as it relates to working with grieving and bereaved families. Furthermore, it will explore ways in which our NICU staff has worked together over the last 5 years to foster a working relationship with one another to promote legacy building and bereavement support for families and patients. This course will examine the many facets of multi-disciplinary care as it relates to bereavement and palliative cases in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit.

Presenter

Anne West Kesner lives in Chesapeake, Virginia with her husband of 9 years and her 3 year old son. She completed her Board Certification as a Chaplain in 2014 and her certification in Thanatology in 2017.
Anne completed her Master’s degree specializing in Pastoral Care and Counseling at Princeton Seminary in Princeton, NJ. She works at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA for 7 years as a chaplain. She now holds the role of Family/Staff Support Coordinator where she works on promoting self-care research, resiliency training, and moral distress support to physicians and staff, including offering bereavement services to families and staff. She also is the chaplain for the Pain and Palliative Care team at the hospital where she, along with this team, provide a whole person/family system care of patients with pain, multiple medical issues, and end of life care.

How It Works
To participate, all that is needed is a computer with Internet access and speakers, as the presentation audio and visuals are "webcast." Our webinars are priced per computer terminal, not per participant. That means you can invite as many colleagues to join you as can fit in your conference room or cluster around your computer. As a participant, you will be able to interact with the presenters, who will ask questions of the audience and answer questions posed by participants.

System Requirements
• As a best practice, we highly recommend an Ethernet connected computer for best connectivity and listening experience. You may experience some buffering of audio on lower bandwidth wireless connections.
• Internet Browsers:  Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 or later, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Windows Edge browser.
• Stable Internet Connection, DSL or above:  100kbps for video transmission, 300kbps for screen sharing and remote control, 500kbps to ensure fluidity of all services.
• Operating System: Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Mac OS X v10.4 or higher, Linux, Solaris.
• Adobe Flash Player 13.0 or newer: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
• Computer Speakers

The link below will test your system to make sure you are running the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player and to make sure it is not being blocked by your network.

The "Connectivity" line should have a green check mark. If it does not please contact your network administrator to allow TelSpanWeb access to port RTMPE 1935. This will allow your Adobe Flash Player to run properly through TelSpanWeb. "Application Sharing" applies only to presenters, so if you see a red "X," that's OK.
If you have any further questions or concerns, or if you do not have computer speakers, please contact APC at info@professionalchaplains.org for assistance.
